On a Saturday afternoon in late September, neighbours in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood will come together for a conversation about languages in Vancouver – past, present, and future.
Homemade food will make people feel at home. At language tables, people can join mini lessons in different languages that they may not know. A facilitated “speed dating” activity will invite people to play musical chairs and sit with someone they don’t know, spending time interacting in different languages, even if it’s just a few words. Speakers will tell stories related to language and their experiences in them.
Indigenous languages will also be a focal point – what are the Indigenous languages of this land? Who is speaking them or learning them now? Guests will be asked to help envision what Vancouver could look like 150 years from now, in terms of its language landscape. What do we want to see and hear in our communities, schools, seniors homes, universities, daycares, and friendships?
Community groups offering more education and connection will be encouraged to share their upcoming programs, and people will be encouraged to build on the new connections they make during the event.
