We got together to stitch fabric bags and will distribute it for free in the community. It is part of the West End Chapter for the Boomerang Bags Project.
Boomerang Bags works to reduce the use of plastic bags by engaging local communities in the making of Boomerang Bags – community made, using recycled materials. Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags. The bags can be given away to friends, family, colleagues, the bag-less stranger in front of you at the supermarket. They can be used to wrap presents in or stashed in your car and handbag so that you’re never caught without a reusable bag when you need one. However you choose to distribute your bags, the most important thing is to ensure that they’re distributed with a message…about waste, about sustainability, about community…make the connection and empower and inspire people to be part of the solutions!
We got rescued fabric from “Our Social Fabric” event to stitch the bags. We have made the Logo patches for the bags using screen printing techniques. These Logo patches carrying the message will be stitches as pockets on the fabric bags.
The bags are now ready to be distributed among the people in our neighbourhood. Daniel Rotman will be wearing the “Plastic Bag Monster” costume and he will give the bags away for free during the “Car Free Day” in the neighbourhood!
Our project aims to provide a platform for people to get together, interact, work for a cause, and feel good about it! We will encourage people in the neighbourhood to donate fabric for our project instead of discarding it.
While stitching the bags, beginners will learn essential skills like sewing. People will be encouraged to discuss the problems affecting our environment and think of solutions to solve them. We will all be encouraged to make eco-friendly choices and support each other in this journey.
