For our project a group of Richmond community members who have lived experiences facing poverty, housing instability and homelessness worked to together to creatively express their stories.
We used visual art as a medium to create an interactive installation which explored these themes. With disposable film cameras participants documented their first-hand contact with homelessness, poverty, and unstable living situations. We then combined the photos with text generated by the group and worked together to build a delicate house shaped structure with walls of suspended images. In this way, participant’s artwork was combined to form an installation which visitors could not only view but also enter, evoking the impression of an ephemeral and unsubstantial shelter.
We hosted a public event featuring drama, music, poetry, and storytelling, and there we presented our art installation to the Richmond community.
