Residents and neighbours in Joyce Collingwood combined forces on September 17, 2016 to throw a fall/back to school Block Party event bringing together music, gardening and a celebration of our local businesses.
Originally planned as a park gathering, our backup plans came in handy when it rained cats and dogs as the date approached. We moved our event to the front of Collingwood Neighbourhood House, already a popular gathering place that supports our diverse community.
Amazing taiko drumming players opened our party and the rain favoured us with a timely break for our Taiko Tour of the community gardens and up to our local bakery.
We had tents to shelter local artists from music school, CW Music, who played and sang for the crowds. The tents also protected our free local business prize raffle draw of donated gifts from neighbouring businesses and our seedling gardening activity. Kids and adults alike took home starter herb plants to cultivate and learned about sustainability and growing from a community gardener volunteer.
The day was a tremendous success and the volunteer organizers received such wonderful feedback they are hoping to continue in the future!
