During a couple weeks in August and September and also in May, I created an opportunity for youth to come out and share their artwork and their poetry. This was hosted in the Richmond Public Library.
The process of making it happen was really great where I had a lot of volunteer support and talented youth interested in assembling or being a part of the event. There was an open call to youths to send their work and I curated 50 submissions and picked 30 to be featured in the RPL. I settled on the name, “Poetry Wall of Flame” which had about 30 poets from Richmond and surround areas displayed. We cut out a bunch of different materials to make a fire around where we assembled the poems. After a few days of assembling, the exhibition went up. The public also had their own opportunity to hang up their poems as well. There was about 50 poems written by the public!
In terms of the poetry exhibition celebration ending day, I collaborated with the Richmond World Festival during the day of the event. I had youth poets reciting their words as well as interactive area for people to hang up their own poems as part of Imagination World. They had snacks, food and fun!
Overall, it was a great opportunity to explore and have fun with the youth poets in the community and the community at large.
