80 residents shared an afternoon and evening together. Four local bands brought entertainment and music, residents contributed to a a pot luck dinner. A local church provided tables and chairs for a sit down meal in the street. The fire truck and trampoline in the street added fun for children while adults mingled and visited.
The past few years our neighbourhood has seen much transition of selling, buying & moving resulting in many new faces and a need to actively build a sense of community. Our dinner brought together new leaders/organizers and introduced new neighbours of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
A resident of South American background expressed concern that a police presence might make people feel uncomfortable. This was an interesting glimpse into cultural perceptions and a reminder of the value of community police work in building trust.
Throughout the summer months neighbours continue to greet one another on the sidewalk and seem eager to continue building relationships.
The grant money was helpful in providing funds for sound equipment and extra food.
