The 28A Bücherwinkel “Book Nook” has been a cheerful and welcome addition to our 28A Avenue neighborhood.

I’ve planned on hosting a little library in my yard for many years, and thanks to this generous grant, I was finally able to make the project happen. I wanted it to be cute and charming, but large enough to host a good variety of titles and even tall children’s books.  The outside finishes are inspired by our main house and include little window boxes for seasonal touches. The structure also includes solar-powered interior lighting, making it easy to browse books on dark evenings. For the holidays, I added Christmas lights similar to the ones on our house for a cute mini matching effect.

I spent many weeks considering the perfect name and kept circling back to “28A Book Nook”. It was clear and simple, but lacked a certain charm. When a friend suggested “what about something with German flair?” (inspired by my Swiss-German surname), the search for the perfect moniker took a turn towards Bücherwinkel [BYOO-kher-vin-kel] and never looked back.

From the very beginning, the project received overwhelming support. When I first shared the idea on our community Facebook group, the response was incredible! Neighbours began donating books even before the library was complete. This early enthusiasm created a diverse collection of titles for all ages and interests—there’s something for everyone.

I am so grateful for the grant that made this possible. Your support enabled me to create a special little spot that reflects the creativity and generosity of our neighborhood. Looking ahead, I plan to include other items, such as a seed library and small handmade items to further support the spirit of sharing.

Thank you for helping me turn a simple idea into a lasting community treasure!
