On the afternoon of Sunday, September 8th, 4th Street between 4th Ave and 5th Ave was activated to engage and entertain the neighbourhood! Approximately 80 people of all ages gathered to enjoy a potluck spread and tasty treats to complement pulled pork sandwiches and beef and vegetarian hotdogs served by the organizers. There was lots of chatting and laughing and game playing including  corn hole, street hockey, soccer, bubble hockey, and giant Jenga. Our kids area offered bubbles, temporary tattoos, a playhouse, kids crafts, and toys.

A highlight of the event were the live musicians, a local duo whose mix of contemporary tunes were enjoyed by all. Fresh popcorn and ice cream treats were served to all. As the sun set, neighbours and friends continued connecting on porches up and down the street.

The event was planned by a committee of neighbours who wanted to get to know the street. Again this year, they advertised the event with a small flyer that they handed out to the surrounding area The permit and insurance were secured online and were relatively easy to process. With the committee’s event planning background, the event execution went smoothly and was enjoyed by all.

The biggest takeaway would be that an annual event builds year over year, with a larger crowd but also an expectation to have a few different offerings while providing a consistent event experience.
