The planning involved for the picnic and awareness began in early June.We advertised in social media, printed posters and distributed them throughout town and closer to the event we were in the local paper. The event occurred the same time as our Apricot festival so was included in the line up of events for the day. On the day of the Teddy bear picnic and bear awareness presentation ,Lillooet was still in a heat wave and smoke from a nearby fire rolled in. That did not deter 15 interested and enthusiastic attendees.
Families arrived with their picnic lunches and we provided treats for the kiddies of gummy bears and bear paw cookies keeping with our theme.we were also graciously donated a veggie tray and desserts.
After the lunch our presenter Lydia talked out bear awareness with handouts for the adults and coloring pages a nd stickers for the kids. She had an array of displays of what attract bears, for example did you know that they love citronella candles so take them in at night.Biggest concern was lock up your garbage at night and keep your fruit picked .
Overall people came away informed and the setting for the picnic was perfect.
Thank you to neighborhood small grant for making this event happen.
