The Nature Discovery Kits were distributed to 60 young students of Howard DeBeck Elementary to encourage them to explore the outdoors, my favourite place to be.

The kits included a brochure of local bugs and plants, a magnifying glass, a notebook, a granola bar, a pen, and a toy insect. While making the Nature Discovery Kits, I learned so many things like budgeting, arranging with others, and time management. At the beginning, I thought I had the budget spreadsheet accurate to my spendings, but towards the end of the project, I realized that things cost a lot less than I thought.

This being my first big project where I had to plan my spendings opened my eyes to a lot of challenges and learning opportunities. I ended up spending $323.49 which included additional items that I added to the kits that were not on the original plan. I’d like to give a big thanks to my parents who supported me by teaching me the skills to complete this project and helping me through the many purchases. It was difficult for me to balance the project with school, but I knew what I was signing up for and I don’t regret it one bit. If I hadn’t done this project, I wouldn’t know how to properly email people, budget my money, and overcome the tough areas that benefited me so greatly.

The process of making this project made me so happy because I kept thinking about the kids’ faces when they received the Nature Discovery Kits. I know that if I was their age and received these kits, I would be head over heels. Overall, I enjoyed making these kits and the whole process prepared me for how I can continue to better the community in the future.
