For the past 3 years our volunteers have created over 20 Pollinator Friendly/”Butterfly” Gardens across the District of Sechelt here on the Sunshine Coast. In 2024 we first reseeded several of the existing ones before launching into working on two much larger gardens. One is the “Streetside Garden” which has existed as a Community Garden space for 15 years but had been neglected due to several challenges including a lack of volunteers to maintain it. In the Spring our volunteers did an amazing job of cleaning out unhealthy plants and seeding and planting pollinator friendly ones then we regularly watered, weeded and nurtured the garden throughout the summer. Recently a volunteer team prepared the site for winter. Behind Sechelt Hospital there is a 7 acre Demonstration Regenerative Farm, please visit their website salishsearegenerative.farm to learn about this phenomenal project. There we created a new large garden full of pollinator friendly plants to aid in the nurturing and health of the farm crops. The food raised was regularly distributed to the Sechelt Hospital, the shishalh Nation, the Sechelt Food Bank and several other Community Organizations. Our volunteers look forward to next year when we will expand the Pollinator Friendly Gardens to support this Urban Farm that has made a significant impact on the local environment and food sustainability in our Communities.
