The Box Sunday Socials were a truly special and enriching experience, bringing together a wonderful cross-section of the community in a way that supported both our social and mental well-being. Held each week at the Groundswell Community Garden, these gatherings became a cherished tradition where neighbors connected over a shared meal. On average, we fed up to 15 people per Sunday, with a mix of elders, young moms with their babies, families, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and even residents from Columbia House who stopped by to join us. These lunches provided a much-needed space for people to gather, connect, and relax. The casual, welcoming atmosphere allowed us to share stories, laugh together, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food and company. We were even treated to live music, with local musicians offering their talents, and there was no shortage of games, lively conversation, and spirited exploration by the little ones under three years old.The social aspect of the lunches had a deep impact on the mental and social health of everyone involved. Many people who attended spoke about how valuable it was to connect with others in such a relaxed, supportive environment. For some, these gatherings were a rare chance to step outside, engage with others, and feel part of a community. It was heartwarming to watch friendships grow and see neighbors support each other in ways big and small. No food ever went to waste. Even when I didn’t have a specific request for someone who could use a lunch, I made sure that extra food went to those who needed it most. Leftovers were shared with community members struggling with food insecurity, ensuring that no one went without. The Box Sunday Socials not only filled stomachs but also filled hearts. They created lasting connections and deepened the sense of community, showing us all the power of coming together, sharing a meal, and caring for one another.
