We received a grant to preserve in photographs the totem poles in the Balmoral Hotel painted by noted aboriginal artist Danny Dennis. The show grew into a retospective of Danny’s life work as we were able to present over 25 original works through a private collection lent by Tom Detlor. We were particularly honoured by the attendance of Danny’s aunts and nieces. The show was up for four days and over 100 people attended. The show was the subject of a story that ran in the Vancouver Sun and Province on August 17, 2016. If you are interested in reading it, it can still be found online.
Many community members helped by baking Bannock and other goodies for the opening, helping put up and take down the show, and helping out in general. The event was a great success. Preserving the totems in pictures was important as the floor has since caved in at the Balmoral.
