On a beautiful sunshine-filled Sunday, we gathered for a Summer Inspired by the Land Creative Retreat at the Pope Mountain Arts Centre. Program Manager, Wendy Lintunen, had promoted the event through social media. The program was registered at fifteen, and fourteen attended despite this being graduation weekend in our communities of Nak’azdli and Fort St James.

The day began with snacks and coffee/tea, and an opening circle getting to know old friends and new ones. From there we meandered through the neighbourhood, making our way to Cottonwood Beach one block away.  Of note were the caterpillars, monarch butterflies, wild roses, agates and mushrooms seen hiding in the greenery. Participants were cued to look for colour and texture, and to bring back stones, sticks, and plants they may wish to incorporate into their art projects.

When everyone returned, there was cold water waiting for warm artists! Using their new journals, participants jotted down what they’d like to remember for the painting and writing activities.

We shared lunch of fresh Sana’aih Markets buns, cheese, pumpkin soup and melons (and birthday cake!) for dessert.

After lunch, participants went ahead with independent painting or followed along with an acrylic flow activity incorporating natural materials. One of the highlights of the day was seeing everyone’s artwork and the positive feedback from fellow artists.

After a snack and beverages, we moved into a group poem-writing activity based on the nature walk, followed by individual writing activities. The day ended with gentle yoga and a closing circle.

Participants remarked that the day was refreshing and relaxing.

Wendy took photos throughout the day and posted a beautiful video to the Pope Mountain Arts’ Facebook page.
