We typically do an annual fire smart day on Whitewater Street in Whistler, but the turnout can be lower than expected some years due to busy schedules. This time we got a grant from the Neighbourhood Small Grants to have a barbecue on the street after the Fire Smart Day.
It was a huge success despite the rain and my newly broken hand. We got pizza instead of barbecuing, as it was a pretty rainy day, and it was hard to do with one hand. We had at least 20 people stop by, have some pizza, and hang out over the course of the evening.
It was fantastic as the pizza, beer, and bubbly gave everyone an opportunity to socialize under the tent and well into the evening. A lot of neighbours got a chance to meet new neighbours they didn’t know very well. The fire smart day was also a success, as many neighbours continued to firesmart over the week to do their part.
Building new connections with our neighbours was a highlight for many. And the community grant enabled us to make that happen. We kept the event simple, but it was a lot of fun, and I look forward to doing more in the future, as knowing your neighbours is what it’s all about in a small community.
