Weaving Community: A space to learn, relax, and connect

Our project “Weaving Community” was born from the desire to offer Hispanic women a safe space to learn a new skill, disconnect from daily stress, and build meaningful connections. Thanks to the support of the program that sponsored us, we were able to bring this crochet workshop to life, led by Helena, a talented and generous woman who shared her passion and experience with us.

Planning began with an open invitation through social media and community groups. We were pleasantly surprised by the response—many women wanted to join, even without prior crochet experience. This confirmed a real need for spaces like this. One of our biggest challenges was organizing everything within a short timeframe, but through clear communication and collaboration, we were able to gather materials, coordinate the venue, and create a warm, welcoming environment.

On the day of the workshop, women of different ages and backgrounds—many of them mothers—came together and found in this activity a true place of refuge. From the very beginning, the atmosphere was full of connection, laughter, patience, and learning. Through crochet, we learned not only how to use yarn and a hook, but also how to focus, relax, and be present. For many, it was a therapeutic experience—a moment just for themselves, away from the noise of daily responsibilities.

Helena taught us basic techniques, but also shared her personal journey with crochet, which inspired everyone in the room. By the end of the workshop, many participants felt empowered and excited to continue practicing at home. Some even expressed a desire to form an ongoing group to keep learning and sharing together.

This project was made possible thanks to the vision of Luu, the founder of Arteterapia, who is always thinking of how to create spaces where Hispanic women can connect with themselves, build friendships, and feel safe to grow. Through her leadership, each workshop is not only a space to receive but also to give to invite women to share their skills, stories, and talents with others.

We are deeply grateful for the support we received. This was just the beginning of a beautiful network of women who will continue to weave wellness, identity, and community—thread by thread.
