With support from our NSG grant, we planned a Renaissance Faire-themed Pride Prom for youth ages 10-24 in the South Surrey/White Rock community. The event was hosted at the Youth Space, a free youth drop-in centre in South Surrey. Youth arrived dressed in gowns, capes, corsets, and with whimsical props, a basket of potions and a pouch full of crystals were some highlights. With help from our youth leaders at the Youth Space, we made decisions on the theme, decorations, food, music, and activities. One key decision was to host two separate sessions, one for youth ages 10-13 and another for ages 14-24. This helped create a more comfortable environment for self-expression that was tailored to the different interests of each group.
On the day of the prom, we danced, enjoyed some impressive karaoke performances, and played classic Ren Faire games like ring toss and archery. We had a delicious spread of charcuterie, fruit platters, mushroom house-themed cupcakes, and, of course, pizza. The night ended on a high note with a powerful dance performance from a youth attendee that had the entire crowd on their feet, cheering.
Our youth leaders also suggested creating a quiet space, in case attendees ever felt overwhelmed or overstimulated. They designed a sensory tent outside, decorated with a rainbow parachute and filled with yoga mats, sensory toys, and earmuffs for anyone needing a break. Inside the lounge area, we also provided drawing supplies and card games for those who preferred a more relaxed atmosphere over dancing and singing.
Our Ren-Faire Pride Prom was truly a magical celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ pride, identity, and youth community and we are beyond grateful to have had the support of NSG to make this event possible.
