I received a salsa recipe from a friend whose Ukrainian great grandmother (Baba) had created. She used this recipe and others along with the bounty of her garden to share with anyone who was hungry. My plan was to buy seeds and canning supplies to grow the ingredients to make this salsa and share with community members. My garden did not produce as I had hoped, so I pivoted. Instead of purchasing a pressure canner as planned, I purchased a less expensive water bath canner and spent the savings at a local farm to buy boxes of fresh produce to make this salsa. Some friends and family from the community came and helped make many jars of salsa and wonderful memories. Everyone who helped took jars of salsa home with them and many more jars have been given out to other community members. All have them have been well received and appreciated. I am honoured to be able to continue the tradition of canning and being able to bless others with Baba’s recipe.
The funds provided were spent on seeds, a canner, jars/seals, spices, labels and produce.
