“Empowering Community with Lifesaving First Aid Skills” lecture has been held on Oct 11th in Langley, with 54 participants registered. It was truly an honor to share our knowledge, skills and experiences with our community.

The events involving planning and organization. After months of preparation (including find the venue, set the dates and time), outlining the lecture structure and details based on last year feedback, and promoted events through various social media platforms (Ins, WeChat), neighbours enthusiastically signed up to participate, and nearly filling the lecture room to capacity.

The two instructors are senior Heartsaver® instructors from the American Heart Association (AHA), with extensive teaching experience and volunteer experience in various major events across the countries.

Lecture usually starts with explaining simple rules to keep you and others safe in emergencies. What we covered in lecture including:

  1. What to do when someone suddenly needs help
  2. CPR + how to use the AED in real life
  3. How to recognize and deal with home / working place emergencies: stroke signs, seizures, bleeding, chocking, burns
  4. How to recognize and deal with outdoor emergencies: drowning, hypothermia, heatstroke, etc.
  5. Fun practice together & friendly Q&A

The attendees listened attentively, took notes, and asked various questions. After the lectures, participants responded positively, saying that the first aid knowledge shared in Chinese was very useful and practical. Many of participants are new immigrants or elder people who barely understand English. Lecture in Chinese make them more comfortable and help them learn and connected. Participants wish to have more opportunities to learn first aid skills in the future; they expressed that, through lectures, they gained not only basic first aid knowledge but also hands-on practice skills from theory to actual exercises. Additionally, the sharing of real-life and work-related case studies provided great benefits to everyone.

We hope to continue hosting similar first aid related knowledge and skills sharing lectures in 2026 to meet the community’s demand.

Big thanks to NSG, program coordinator Yunuen Perez Vertti, you and your team’s generous support and funding made this project possible.

Thank you, my dear neighbours, for being a part of this community journey. We look forward to sharing more knowledge, skills and experiences with you all in next year.
