Evergreen Volunteers started its first volunteer job in T. E. Scott Park in March 2023 with five people.
Since then, the team has grown to over 50 members. Most of the members are immigrants between 55 and 76 years old.
So far, the team have participated in 30 times of volunteer work in various Parks in the City of Surrey. The work included planting trees and shrubs, removing invasive plants, taking care of gardens and trees, and covering blank areas with cardboard to keep weeds out.
The volunteer jobs have brought lots of happiness and Joy to the participants. During the work, they talk to each other, exchange ideas and information, learn the knowledge and skills of caring for plants and gardens, and learn English and Canadian culture from Park’s staff. The work activities also provide the attendees excellent opportunities for physical excises and exposure to nature and sunshine. When volunteers work together, they feel more part of the community.
Evergreen Volunteers will continue the volunteer job as mentioned above for a minimum of once per month in 2026 and for many years to come.
During this project, we had a seminar on how invasive blackberries impact the native plants.
The seminar gave attendees hands-on knowledge and understanding of the control of invasive blackberry.
