Growing Stronger Together
Our project, the ParentCafé, was born from a desire to create a safe, welcoming space where parents, guardians, and grandparents can come together, share experiences, and support one another. From the outset, our planning emphasised inclusivity, respect, and community. We committed to making the ParentCafé open to all parents/guardians and grandparents across Haida Gwaii, with children of any age (0–99).
First Gathering — Tackling Bullying Together
Our first session took place on Pink Shirt Day 2025, under the title “Stop Bullying, Together!”
This topic had been raised several times in the community, signalling a real need for conversation, support, and awareness. The event offered care givers a space to learn, share concerns, and reflect — together. It was offered in a hybrid format, allowing participants from across Haida Gwaii to attend either in person or online. The session featured a keynote speaker, and was generously supported by our local Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and District Advisory Councils (DPAC), and the Haida Gwaii Family & Child, whose backing helped make the event possible.
Second Gathering — Healthy Relationships in a Digital World
Our second event, “Healthy Relationships in a Digital World: Kids & Screens,” responded to growing interest and concern around how technology is shaping young people’s lives. We explored how families use devices, what healthy boundaries can look like, and how parents can support digital well-being while staying connected.
Once again, the session included a keynote guest, whose insights sparked meaningful conversations among participants. Support from the PAC and Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP) continued to be a vital part of making the event accessible and engaging for families.
This topic struck a chord with many, leading us to plan a follow-up session focused specifically on “Teens & Screens.” Originally scheduled for fall, this session had to be postponed and will now take place in February 2026, continuing the conversation with age-specific guidance and deeper discussion. Like the first gathering, it will be offered in a hybrid format to make participation possible across the island.
Approach & Intent
From the beginning, we focused on:
• Respect and care — The ParentCafé is offered as a friendly, secure space where every voice matters.
• Peer-to-peer exchange and support — Our format encourages sharing by parents, guardians, and grandparents, with space for stories, questions, and mutual learning.
• Flexibility and openness — All care givers are welcome, no matter their child’s age or family situation.
Who’s Behind It
The initiative was launched by two members of the parent community and members of their school’s PAC at Daax̱iigan Sḵ’adáa Née, who envisioned the ParentCafé as a place for real support grounded in empathy and shared experience.
Challenges & Learnings
A key challenge has been meeting the diverse needs of families — spanning different ages, life stages, and cultures. We’ve addressed this through flexible format, child care support, and by creating a space where all voices are welcome.
What We’ve Learned
Care givers value a space where they can speak freely and learn together. Building community happens when people feel heard. Looking ahead, we’ll continue to offer sessions, invite speakers, and grow a space for shared learning.
