Hello! My name is Nancy and I was lucky to get a Small Neighbourhood Grant to help run a “Bike Bus” to the local school. Thanks so much for the grant!
Every Friday, we bike from a set location, down the Dumfries bike lane to the local school. Kids and adults biking together make the experience more joyful and safer for everyone involved. It’s also an active mode of going to school, which can help with self-regulation in school when you travel to school in an active manner.
Challenges we face are mainly weather-related. Anyone who bikes in Vancouver during these months knows it can be rainy and cold. So think like jackets, gloves, and (thanks to the grant!) nifty wheel bike lights all help the safety and fun of the experience.
Biking in a group helps “normalize” biking in all different types of weather. We bike together through chilly days and rainy days. We do hold the train during rain and frost.
Another important aspect of the bike train is sharing a warm hot chocolate together to warm up and celebrate together. Using reusable cups and large mason jars (brought on my bicycle!), the environmental impact is minimized and the fun maximized 🥳
