Neighbours in my townhouse had been asking all summer if we would be having a block party, as we have had in the past; they look forward to it every year! This year’s block party was at the end of August, to wrap up summer. The weather cooperated as we had a dry, sunny day. A lot of food was bought and prepared for a BBQ, and neighbours contributed in a potluck style. This year, we were particularly lucky that one of our very talented neighbours offered to perform at the block party! He invited one of his friends, and they entertained the crowd. This inspired others to join in by singing, playing instruments and taking their turn at the mic, as well. Then, it turned into karaoke after the band packed up. Many kids participated in this portion of the entertainment.
A kid’s area was also set up with games, chalk, bubbles, etc. Many neighbours help out with the barbecuing. Everyone brings a chair and we sit around and eat and chat. It’s always a wonderful opportunity to meet new neighbours and get to know the people in our complex. Many connections are made and advice is shared. The networking helps us learn about each other and how to take better care of our homes, as we all have similar housing maintenance issues. For some neighbours, the annual block party is the only time that we see each other, so this opportunity is very much appreciated.
