The Where, Why and What:

The No.3 Rd Bark Park had long been a popular spot for residents and their pups. However, after extensive renovations lasting over 3 years, the community had fragmented and shrunk. Fortunately, the excellent safety improvements made to the off-leash areas have since seen an increase in locals discovering and using the park. The Bark Park Reconnect 2026 project was envisioned as an opportunity to welcome the many new users and reconnect with existing community members. It is a community party aimed at bringing residents, dog lovers and pups together in a fun and safe environment to celebrate spring at the most “awesome” dog park in Richmond. The event is inclusive and open to all, featuring Doggie games and prizes, a Doggie Photo Booth, and refreshments for Pups and People.

When and “How did it go?”:

The party took place on May 30, 2026 (2-4 PM) and was a huge success with a large turnout. The weather was perfect (sunny and warm, gentle ocean breeze), the scenery even better (riverside venue with mountain views), and the attendees best of all (over 60 puppies and 80-100 people, all intent on laughing and enjoying each other’s company). We based our canine attendance estimates on the number of take-home Doggie Treat Bags that were handed out, as well as the number of entries for the Doggie Prize Draws. As most of the puppies came with one or both Paw-rents (only a few attendees came with 2 or more pups), we estimated that 80-100 residents attended the event. That was enough to fill the park with conversation, laughter and playful barks. The Doggie games (wading pool, hurdles, costumes) and Photo Booth were a hit, the tropical music (and hula “demonstration”) and the Doggie Prize Draws were enjoyed with deep laughter, and the snacks and refreshments were consumed with gusto and smiles. In short, the results truly exceeded our expectations.

The Lessons and Surprises:

From the moment we decided to hold a Bark Park Reconnect party, support from the local dog community (or Puppy Paw-rents) was tremendous. This support not only came in the form of encouragement and commitments to attend the event, but extended to significant logistical support during the organizing phase, and finally to actual “hands-on-deck” volunteers on the day of the party. The extent and cohesiveness of the Puppy Paw-rent community, and their strong desire to reach out and connect with each other, have truly been a revelation.

A pleasant surprise came from the business community in Steveston. Several businesses allowed us to put up posters and agreed to notify their customers about our Reconnect event via word of mouth. One Steveston business went further and provided complimentary shortbread cookies and mini-cupcakes for our event. These treats were very much appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Memorable Moment:

Toward the end of the event, one Paw-rent stood up, smiled and declared: “After the week I just had, I really needed this! Thanks, Everyone!!”
