Our project began with a simple goal: to create a free, inclusive space where children could learn food skills while building connections in our small island community. With support from a Neighbourhood Small Grant, we eventually launched a “Snack Shack” that brought together children and youth to cook and share food. A local Red Seal Chef partnered with us, providing expertise and ensuring safe, high-quality instruction.

Planning involved collaboration between school staff, community members, and the chef. We secured an accessible space in our school kitchen and followed food-safe practices throughout. We spread the word through school communication and community networks to ensure broad participation and a welcoming environment for all.

Each session offered hands-on learning focused on food preparation, hygiene, and kitchen etiquette. Students helped prepare a range of simple dishes while learning skills such as safe knife use, handwashing, and teamwork. The chef modelled best practices and encouraged students to take ownership of their learning. Over time, students grew more confident and began to take pride in contributing to a shared space.

The most meaningful outcome was the project’s impact beyond the sessions themselves. Inspired by their experience, students wanted to continue cooking and sharing food at school. This led to the creation of a free school cafeteria initiative, where students now help prepare food for their peers. This has increased access to nutritious food and provided ongoing opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and skill development.

This project showed us that when students are given meaningful roles and supported by community expertise, they thrive. The Snack Shack became a foundation for lasting change, strengthening both student learning and community connection. We look forward to continuing this into next year and beyond!
