English Corner’s summer gathering brought together 46 people—32 adults and 14 children—for an afternoon of food, fun, and connection.
Participants came with their families and friends, creating a wonderfully diverse group that included neighbours with Mexican, Ukrainian, Slovakian, Filipino, Iranian, Bolivian, German, and Japanese backgrounds.
The weather cooperated for most of the day, giving everyone a chance to enjoy boat rides before the wind picked up later in the afternoon. There were beach games, plenty of socializing, and many opportunities for people to meet someone new.
The barbecue was also a big success. Everyone enjoyed either a burger or hot dog, and there were no leftovers—a sure sign of good planning! Community members also contributed potluck dishes, helping stretch the $425 Neighbourhood Small Grant even further.
Seven volunteer facilitators helped make the gathering possible and welcomed participants throughout the afternoon. The event was also a chance to invite newcomers and returning participants to join English Corner again in the fall.
More than anything, the gathering created a relaxed space where people from many different cultures could spend time together, share food, and build new friendships.
As the project leader shared, “Lots of beach games, socializing, and meeting new friends – it was great.”
It was a joyful summer afternoon—and a wonderful example of what can happen when neighbours come together.
