I am an 82-year-old hiker who formed a Hiking Group 12 years ago in the Coquitlam area. I have volunteered my time as the Hiking Group Leader. Every Saturday, I designed a different hiking route and led the hikes for our group in the Tri-City areas.
Initially, I applied for NSG funding to host a 10-year anniversary party for our hiking group. My fellow hikers corrected me, as it has been 12 years since I was leading the group.
We went on our regular 2-hour hike in the morning at the Trail Pavilion at Pitt Meadows. A lot of our hikers volunteered to help me make preparations for a BBQ held at a friend’s farm in Pitt Meadows.
The event was very successful. 29 hikers in our community attended the hike and the BBQ on this sunny Saturday. We had a great time enjoying our friendship with good food, good laughs, and endless conversations about our hikes and friendship over the years. 12 years have gone by so quickly, and all the hikers expressed how grateful I was to volunteer my time guiding them to various trails from easy, moderate to difficult level. I just hope that I will have the energy and health to continue leading the group and continue to contribute my efforts to influence seniors in my community to continue exercising, stay fit and be socially active.
Thank you, NSG, for providing funding for my 12-year anniversary party!
