In the late afternoon of August 26, we held our second annual summer music concert in the parking lot of Stornoway. The event was more than simply a concert; it was an opportunity for neighbours to come together, socialize, enjoy live music, and strengthen community bonds with both new and old neighbours.
This year, our band consisted of five members, including myself and friends from school and cadets. We performed a selection of popular songs from the 1970s through the 2000s, which we felt would appeal to neighbours of different ages and musical backgrounds. Throughout the concert, our performers took turns leading the songs and encouraging everyone to sing along, creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere.
One of the highlights of this year’s concert was the increased participation from the neighbourhood. Compared with last year, more people attended and actively took part in the event. We invited several audience members to come up and sing with us, which added an exciting and spontaneous element to the evening. For the finale, we were also joined by a special guest, a friend of mine, who performed the final song with us. This created a memorable ending to the concert and brought everyone together.
The neighbours responded enthusiastically throughout the evening. They clapped along, sang with us, and some even got up and danced to the music. They also enjoyed the refreshments we provided, which gave everyone an opportunity to relax, socialize, and enjoy one another’s company. Everyone appeared happy and engaged, and the positive energy from the audience made the experience especially rewarding for all of the performers.
The event required months of planning and preparation. Our responsibilities included selecting songs, organizing the performance schedule, meeting regularly to practice, preparing the equipment, and setting up and taking down the performance area. All five band members and volunteers went above and beyond, not only preparing their individual songs but also helping with the many tasks required before and after the concert.
The support of the YNSG was also an important part of the event’s success. Their generous funding helped provide food, drinks, and party supplies, making the evening more enjoyable for everyone.
The Stornoway summer concert was ultimately much more than a musical performance. It was a celebration of community, friendship, and togetherness. Seeing neighbours of all ages singing, clapping, dancing, and even coming up on stage to perform with us demonstrated how music can bring people together. The happiness and enthusiasm shown by the neighbours made all the preparation worthwhile.
The success of this year’s event has encouraged us to continue creating opportunities for neighbours to gather and enjoy activities together. We are grateful to everyone who participated, supported us, and helped make the concert such a memorable and enjoyable community event.
