Truro Drive Annual Block Party — August 30, 2026 “Create a Strong Sense of Community”
On an overcast August 30th, we accomplished the goal of helping all the neighbours on Truro Drive get to know each other better by holding our Annual Block Party from noon to 4 p.m. We had a few raindrops, but that did not dampen the spirit of the 40 or more people who attended the event.
A canopy with tables was set up at the north end of the street, a barbecue for hot dogs, coolers full of drinks, and plenty of snacks for everyone to enjoy. We welcomed back many of our regulars, along with some new faces on the street. It was wonderful to reconnect!
This year, the Block Watch sent us some folders with information and cards for everyone so they may be able to get a discount on the house insurance. Very nice of Block Watch to do this for us.
As we all get so busy with our own activities and lives, it is always nice to take a few hours to slow down, share stories, and catch up with our neighbours. Everyone enjoyed themselves and talked about their summer adventures, back-to-school preparations, and new travel plans for the fall.
There was plenty of fun for all ages. A neighbour brought out a cornhole game, which quickly turned into some friendly competition. Parents with younger children brought games to share, and it was great to see the kids playing together. We also had a table covered in paper where everyone could draw to their heart’s content.
A big thank you goes out to the Eades and the Nistors for allowing us to host the party in front of their homes at the north end of the street. A special thank you also goes to Jim Eade, who took on the role of chef. His barbequed hot dogs were a big hit! And, of course, the ice cream bars and freezies proved to be another favourite treat.
We were also delighted to have some neighbours from the surrounding streets join us. It was great to expand our circle and meet even more people from our community!
As part of the event, we collected donations for the Steveston Food Cupboard, and the response was fantastic. Not only did we donate all the items people brought, but we also donated items that were left over from the party. In addition, our neighbours contributed $45 in cash donations. The Steveston Food Cupboard was very appreciative of everyone’s generosity.
After the event, I received many kind emails thanking us for organizing the Block Party once again. Their messages were a wonderful reminder of why we continue to hold these events. They help strengthen the sense of community we enjoy on Truro Drive, bring neighbours together, and ultimately help make our street an even safer and friendlier place to live.
