Thanks to the support from Prince Rupert & District Hospice Society, I was able to facilitate a death cafe event at a local coffee shop in Prince Rupert on August 26, 2026.
What is death cafe?
Death cafe is a group-led discussion of death and dying with no agenda, objectives, or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session. Death cafe was developed to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives. It started in the UK, but it has been offered in more than 90 countries in the world.
Prince Rupert Death Cafe
Our death cafe in Prince Rupert was a success. About 15 people participated in the event. We split into two groups and discussed various topics related to death and dying. To facilitate conversations, we also used the Death Deck – cards with a mix of multiple choice and open-ended questions designed to make the conversation around death more approachable and even fun. Death can be a heavy topic, but the laughter and stories shared made the topic much lighter yet no less meaningful. We have received positive feedback from the attendees, and many of them mentioned that they would like to join if we host another death cafe event in the future.
