Our project was to build a little library in our neighbourhood!
Its been a topic of neighbourhood chats for about a year now, but nobody could commit to a location.
The universe decided to step in though and a big wind came and took out a tree in my front yard.
Brilliant. Location solved.
Next up, sourcing a box.
We used the grant money to hire a local carpenter to replicate a simple 2 door box from the Little Free Library store. It has 2 shelves with lots of space for books, big clear windows so you can see said books, and nice and strong magnets to keep the doors closed.
Once the box had an arrival date, we planned a painting party with the neighbourhood children and got to decorating it.
The paint was donated by a neighbour from his leftover house paint stash and had just enough to paint the box and do some touch ups.
We had a smallish turn out as most kids were away on holiday, but enough showed up that we got her painted in 20 minutes.
We also handed out painted “book spines” for older neighbours to make into their favourite books. These have been nailed to the sides as decorations.
Our library is across from a private school, down the road from an elementary school, and right smack dab in the middle of a popular walking loop.
We are averaging about 8 visits a day so far and the library contents have changed over several times.
