Senior Community Social Event – Project Story
The Senior Community Social Event was held on June 27, 2026, at Thompson Community Centre in Richmond.
The goal of this project was to bring seniors together through health education, music, movement, and social interaction while creating opportunities for meaningful connections between seniors and youth in the community.
The event began with a health education session covering medication safety, fall prevention, and recognizing emergency situations and when to call 911. Participants also received bilingual resource handouts featuring local senior support services, including Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives, Minoru Seniors Centre, Richmond Multicultural Community Services, Vancouver Coastal Health, Meals on Wheels, and important community phone numbers such as 211, 811, and 911. These materials provided practical information that participants could continue to use after the event.
The second part of the event focused on recreation and social connection. Youth performers presented a variety of musical performances, including vocal solos, vocal ensembles, a violin solo, a piano solo, and a cello, violin, and piano ensemble. Participants then joined chair dance and seated exercise, followed by interactive games including Ping Pong Cup Toss, Flip Cup Catch, Dice Challenge, and Memory Matching. Refreshments and small gifts created a relaxed atmosphere where participants could continue talking and getting to know one another.
Throughout the event, the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. Seniors actively participated in the exercises and games, and spent time chatting with one another and with the youth volunteers during mini games. The event brought together people of different generations in a comfortable and inclusive setting, encouraging conversations, shared experiences, and new friendships.
