Healthy Food Tasting and Wellness Meet-Up
With the support of a community grant from Neighbourhood Small Grant- South Vancouver. I had the opportunity to organize a Healthy Food Tasting and Wellness Meet-Up on Aug 21, 2026, for our community.
The journey began with purchasing small veggie plants and growing them together in the community garden for two months. We cared for the plants, watched them grow, and eventually brought the spirit of that experience into our community gathering.
More than 38 people from different cultural backgrounds joined the event. We shared and tasted food from Vietnam, Korea, India, Mexico, Afghanistan, Canada, etc, while taking part in interactive games and conversations about healthy food and wellness traditions from different cultures. We ended the afternoon with music and dancing, creating a joyful and welcoming atmosphere where everyone could connect and have fun.
For me, as a newcomer to Canada, this was also a personal milestone. It was my first time hosting a community event here, and I was initially nervous. With the encouragement and support of my mentor, Kwangyoung, and our Women Peer Group, I gained the confidence to lead the event successfully.
This experience made me feel empowered, trusted, and connected to my community. More than funding an event, the grant gave me an opportunity to step into a leadership role and contribute something meaningful to others.
I am grateful for this opportunity and inspired to continue creating more activities that bring people together, celebrate diversity, and build a stronger sense of community.
