Our project, Booming In Sunset, took place from July to the end of August 2026 and brought together a group of local seniors through a series of creative, hands-on craft activities. We met every Wednesday and focused mainly on making handmade flowers, as well as simple animal and bird crafts. The goal was not only to teach new skills but also to create a warm and welcoming space where seniors could spend time together, talk, laugh, and build friendships.
To prepare for the project, we planned simple activities that would be enjoyable for people with different skill levels. We purchased materials such as silk flowers, fabric, metal wires, floral tape, glue, scissors, and other craft supplies. Family members and friends also helped with preparation, setup, and organizing the activities. We shared information about the project through word of mouth, social media, and personal contacts. 2026-1 NSG-Wenxiu Liu
One of the most important things we learned was that the social part of the project was just as meaningful as the crafts themselves. Many participants came because they wanted to learn how to make flowers, but they also enjoyed having a regular reason to meet other people. As the weeks went on, the atmosphere became more relaxed and friendly. Participants shared ideas, helped one another with difficult steps, showed their finished work, and often stayed to talk after the activity.
There were also some small challenges. Some craft techniques were more difficult for certain participants, so we adjusted the activities, demonstrated the steps more slowly, and encouraged participants to help each other. We also learned to keep the projects flexible, because different people worked at different speeds. Instead of focusing on making every piece look perfect, we focused on participation, creativity, and enjoyment.
The project directly benefited approximately 11–20 seniors and helped create stronger social connections in the community. 2026-1 NSG-Wenxiu Liu We were especially happy to see participants feel proud of what they created and comfortable sharing their work with others. The experience showed us that simple, low-cost creative activities can make a real difference in reducing social isolation and helping seniors feel valued and connected.
Overall, Booming In Sunset was a joyful and meaningful experience. We would be very happy to continue similar activities in the future and to welcome even more seniors into this creative and supportive community.
