Thanks to the support of the Neighbourhood Small Grants program, we were able to bring our idea of a Children’s Art Show to life in Sechelt, creating an opportunity for young artists to share their creativity and for our community to come together and celebrate their work.
Featuring about 40 pieces of artwork submitted by 15 young artists, ranging in age from preschoolers to teenagers, the show welcomed about 70 attendees who came to appreciate the talent, imagination, and unique perspectives of local children. Our goal was to create a joyful, welcoming space where young people could feel proud of their work and experience the excitement of sharing their creations.
The grant helped us turn this vision into a vibrant community event. Funding went toward frames and other display supplies, all purchased locally, as well as food and beverages for a kid-friendly reception, largely sourced from the local Davis Bay Farmer’s Market. An Inspiration Corner, stocked with art supplies and paper, invited children to make their own art on the spot. A professional face-painter added an extra touch of fun and festivity.
A highlight of the event was the arrival of local arts reporter/photographer Michael Gurney from the Coast Reporter. The event was subsequently featured in the paper, giving the young artists and their work recognition beyond the walls of the exhibition. Seeing our local paper take an interest in the show was incredibly exciting and affirming for the young artists. This show was about so much more than the art on the display: It was about celebrating our children, fostering pride and self-expression, and strengthening connections within our community. We are deeply grateful to the Neighbourhood Small Grants program for helping to make this special event possible.
