YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE HOME
A MOTTO THAT SAYS IT ALL
Think about the moment when after a long and busy day, you pull into your drive way and tensions or noise of the day seemingly slide off your shoulders. It’s as if you had already slipped into your pyjamas and cuddled in a warm soft blanket; no one or anything could interest you in going out again that evening. It’s peace, it’s comfort and there’s no place like it – You Know When You’re Home. This captures how we feel about our neighbourhood, Anderson Creek.
A NEIGHBOURHOOD WORK PARTY
On July 15, 2017, a hot sunny day, some 25 Anderson Creek residents held a work party during the afternoon to tree plant and expand garden beds in the park area located in the middle of our neighbourhood. There was also weeding & pruning, and repairing & washing of benches and picnic tables. The park is enjoyed by children, adults and pets alike who play games such as tag, soccer or lawn bowling together, or simply sit to enjoy some quiet time with a book, sketch pad or even their mobile device. On special days, we can even catch a local enthusiast manoeuvering his model glider to catch wind movements as he aims for the highest reaches of the sky!
POTLUCK BLOCK PARTY
To complete the day some 50-60 residents in total gathered in the park for a delicious potluck dinner. There was more food than we thought we could ever eat, but thanks to some “problem-solving” residents with appetites, fears of leftovers disappeared. There were games and even a dress-up photo booth to capture the event. We even held an information meeting.
We discussed improvements made this year with the capital matching grant: three child-at-play traffic signs; new plantings to expand landscaping beds; solar garden lights; and, unveiled our new vinyl 6-ft event banner featuring our neighbourhood motto. We presented and debated potential ideas for future improvements to the park and finally, we said our good-byes to a long-time beloved “block captain” resident who would be moving out of the neighbourhood to another city in the following week.
OUR GRATITUDE
We want to thank everyone who participated in the afternoon work party, cooked for the evening potluck, and led games for the children. We particularly need to thank individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to: source our child safety traffic signs, garden plantings & lights; design our banner; and, organize the work and block parties. Thank you to the City of Maple Ridge and Vancouver Foundation for the block party and capital matching funds.
Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the unsung heroes who throughout the year, take the time to hand water the garden beds during hot summer months, weed and prune as necessary, and even decorate the park at Christmas and other holidays.
