Bee Keeping- how to get started and maintain a bee hive
A friend of mine has been bee keeping for several years and often gifted us with his fresh honey.
Wow no comparison to store bought honey! Much much better. I asked him if he would share his knowledge with a small group on how to start up bee keeping to which he agreed. I sent out invites to neighbours and friends.
May 27, 2024 my friend opened his hives in front of myself and 2 other attendees. Rob explained how crucial environment is for bees. Any pesticide use on surrounding plants, predators such as other bees, mice, mites, and bears, can all effect or destroy the colony of bees. Rob then spoke to examining the overall health requirements of the colony and with the hive open he pointed out the characteristics of cells that contained food and larvae. While inspecting the open colony Rob pointed out the Queen and explained that there is only 1 queen per colony and she controls the overall function of laying eggs and health. He then described the worker bees and drones and the roles they play.
Lunch was provided, where Rob went into details on inspecting and preparing, and the requirements for successful wintering of the colony in northern BC winter months.
