I was approached by a neighbour to ask me if I’d be willing to help him organize a neighbourhood block party.
It had been 12 years since the last one, the first one being in 2002.
So, we set out to plan and resurrect the block party!
In years past we arranged for the Port Coquitlam Fire Fighters to stop by if they had time (organized through the Hot Summer Nights program) as there were many children in the neighbourhood at that time. The children have all grown and we decided a more adult orientated entertainment needed to be hired. We hired Darren ‘Elvis’ Lee to sing for us for 2 hours!
We handed out flyers to all of the neighbours outlining the information about the block party, set up an email correspondence so neighbours could ask questions and offer help.
May 31, 2025 was the date chosen, it started out as a very raining day but the sun came out just in time for the party!
We had a great turn out of old and new neighbours, it was an opportunity to make connections and new friends.
We learned that a flyer, reminder emails and help from keen neighbours was all it took to host a fun and inclusive block party!
The block party was a great success and the grant I received from the neighbourhood small grants was integral to making it a success.
