We had a wonderful turnout at our neighbourhood Bike Parade and Treasure Hunt with more than 20 children and their parents attending the event. We set up three tables, one for snacks, one for rock painting, and one for bike decorating. Then, we set up a treasure hunt along Whalley Creek Trail with semi-precious stones for the children to collect.
We had placed posters along Whalley Creek Trail and written about the event in chalk along the walkway, which attracted some new families to the event that we hadn’t met before. We also advertised in our neighbourhood Facebook group. Some of the attendees were very recent additions to the community, so it was great to have an opportunity to welcome them to our community.
At the end of the event, the children all got on their bikes, and the parents paraded with them along the trail as they rode their decorated bikes. Instruments such as bells, hand drums, maracas, and rhythm sticks were handed out for the parents to play as the children rode. A final photograph was taken of all the kids together and prizes were distributed.
Many people commented about how fun the event was and how nice it was to have opportunities to bring the community together. Previously, our neighbourhood has not had a lot of social events, and people generally did not know one another. As such, there was a lot of appreciation for this initiative, especially as many new young families have been moving into the area in recent years. We are finally starting to see a community form in our area thanks to the funding of projects like these by the Neighbourhood Grants Committee.
