I am reporting on my event that was scheduled on June 17,2026, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.
I am the Block Watch Lead for my townhouse complex in Langley, named Chartwell Green. Block Watch groups meet once a year with the local RCMP Community Police Program Coordinator and a Community Liaison Officer who provides information about the Block Watch Program.
Preparation for the event:
I sourced food and looked for the best value for money.
I discussed the event at a number of Social Committee meetings in our complex, as the clubhouse had to be booked and key people made aware of the event and any assistance I would need.
I advertised the event in our monthly newsletter issues, May and June and included the event on the June calendar that is emailed to our residents.
I emailed an invitation with all the details to our residents.
Reminders were sent to our residents twice before the event, in our Monday email of upcoming events.
Posters were put up in our two mailboxes in our townhouse complex.
There was a chalkboard advertising our event placed outside the clubhouse during the week of the event.
I worked with Judy Kim, the RCMP Community Policing Coordinator, to arrange a date that worked for both our schedules. This was Judy’s first public presentation for the Block Watch program, so there was a lot to discuss about the details. It all worked out so well.
The day of the event:
The Langley RCMP representatives in attendance were: Judy Kim – Community Policing Program Coordinator, Constable Peter Mann – Community Liaison Officer, and Francine – Auxiliary Constable in the RCMP volunteer program. There were approximately 30 people, including the three RCMP Block Watch reps.
Judy narrated a PowerPoint slide show that went through all the details of the Block Watch program, how it works, how to contact the police about a suspicious activity, a crime in progress, or to report a theft.
Judy brought a variety of Block Watch resource and support information pamphlets. Constable Peter Mann added much to the conversation with his experience and stories regarding crime prevention, many years in law enforcement and specific knowledge of the Langley area. He was born and raised in Langley and has served with the RCMP here! There were many opportunities to ask questions about crime and safety in Langley.
The food for the event:
We celebrated our caring community with the great food provided, all thanks to the NSG program approving to fund this community project. The grant amount allowed for 3 large sandwich trays, 2 Costco veggie trays, 2 Costco chocolate chip cookie packs, 1 package of brownies, 1 package of mini raspberry strudels, coffee for our large urn, cream and lemon water.
We are so grateful to have had the funding to bring a party atmosphere to the gathering. We have a great community of people living in this townhouse complex. They are happy to watch out for their neighbours and their neighbours’ property, so the Block Watch program works well here. This annual gathering provides the opportunity to reinforce the ideas of the Block Watch program, to introduce it to new residents, to celebrate our relationship with the local RCMP and to discuss current issues of crime in our community.
