Our Block Watch Welcome New Neighbour BBQ Party was a great success and brought our neighbourhood closer together. With support from the $500 Richmond Neighbourhood Small Grant, we were able to organize a welcoming and enjoyable gathering for our neighbours.

As the Block Watch captain, I planned the BBQ with the goal of helping neighbours get to know one another, welcoming new residents, and strengthening our sense of community and neighbourhood safety. We invited all 12 units in our small neighbourhood and encouraged everyone to participate. Neighbours helped with food preparation, set-up, welcoming guests, and clean-up, making the event a shared community effort.

One of our main challenges was welcoming the new residents in Unit 4. Their home was undergoing major renovations, and they could not determine their exact moving date. Because we wanted the BBQ to be a true “Welcome New Neighbour” event, we had to wait until they had moved in before confirming the date. This left us with a very short time to prepare. We worked together and quickly organized the food, supplies, invitations, and other arrangements. The neighbours were very supportive and helped make everything come together.

The response was wonderful. Eleven of our 12 units participated, with a total of 23 people attending. The gathering brought together several generations: our oldest neighbour was 86 years old, four neighbours were in their 70s, and three teenagers also participated. It was wonderful to see people of different ages sitting together, sharing food, talking, and getting to know one another.

A particularly positive outcome was welcoming the two young people from Unit 4. We introduced them to our Block Watch program, explained how it works, and talked about the importance of neighbours looking out for one another. They were happy to join the program, which was one of the most rewarding results of the event.

The $500 Small Grant was very helpful in covering the costs of food and BBQ supplies and allowed us to organize the event without placing the financial burden on individual neighbours.

Through this experience, we learned that flexibility and teamwork are very important when organizing a community event. Even with a short preparation period, neighbours can work together to create something meaningful. Most importantly, we learned that a simple gathering can help people feel more connected and comfortable looking out for one another.

Overall, the BBQ successfully welcomed our new neighbours, strengthened our Block Watch network, and helped build a more connected
