Our goal through this project was to build a set of Bluebird nesting boxes that could be set up on a local property owned by the Nature Trust. A couple of weeks ago we made our box plan and planted a variety of native plants on the property. We had a wonderful day building the boxes! We invited people from our community to participate, however due to cooler weather we didn’t get as big as a turn out that we had hoped for, but that was okay, we had enough neighbours and lots of youth to help with the boxes. A gentleman that lives in Gallagher Lake, cut out all the birdhouse pieces the week prior, so that on building day we just needed to put the houses together. The kids learned how to use a variety of tools and problem solve issues as they came up. By the end of the day we built 13 bluebird boxes. We enjoyed a pizza lunch during the day as well.
A big thank you to the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan /Similkameen and the Neighbourhood Small Grant that allowed us to make this experience and project a reality. This week we’re excited to set up all the boxes.
