We host what’s called Breakfast Club in the summer in our front yard for families in Cumberland to pop by and eat Breakfast while kids play. My husband always cooks a main item on our front flat top and I am the host and planner for the guests. We were able to afford a larger breakfast club through the Neighborhood Small Grants program which allowed us to cover some food costs to have extra options.

I also created a nature scavenger hunt for kids and was able to give out prizes sourced from local Cumberland businesses. We also bought food locally from a butcher in Courtenay and a few other places. We had a fun variety of toys and were blessed to share in food, fun, and community building with many young families who struggle to connect with adults while playing with kids. Our hope this year is to do an even larger event in a block party format, so we can close down the street and welcome neighbours and more people.

We will still provide food and people bring sides to share, but my hope is to have art, chalk, and various stations open for people to create, play, and enjoy conversation. This grant is a beautiful way of affording extra special connection in a world that is ever more difficult to afford the “extras”! We appreciate the work and time put into this program so many can enjoy planning events and bringing people together!
