The Canada 150 event was aimed at encouraging kids to engage with their grandparents and share their stories. All the kids and their grand parents were then invited to a grand celebration event which was attended by over 100 individuals from all age groups and ethnic backgrounds from around the Mitchell community.
The highlight of the event was a cultural performance by the “Sister Clan”. It was a tribute to our roots. The lead singer and Mother of the five beautiful daughters, invited 20 random kids on stage and involved them in a first nations game. It was all fun!
We then cut a giant Canada 150 cake to celebrate the birthday. All the kids gathered around the cake and sang the happy birthday song.
At the end of the ceremony, each kid got a goody bag and the winning entries received a gift certificate each to nearby restaurants.
We are grateful to the Vancouver Foundation and Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives for providing us the funding from the Canada 150 small grants. The kids at Mitchell Elementary will always remember the giant cake and the red and white festivities that marked Canada’s 150.
