We are deeply grateful for the strong and generous support from the Neighbourhood Small Grants program. With this help, our group of neighbours and community friends successfully hosted a truly warm, meaningful, and unforgettable Canada Day celebration! This event was self-organized entirely among our local neighbours and community friends. To plan and organize everything, we mainly relied on making phone calls and spreading the word from friend to friend. We chose Minoru Park in Richmond as our gathering place to celebrate together. The main challenge we encountered initially was organizing the logistics, as most of our participating friends are elderly. Going to several different stores and supermarkets to shop for all the necessary food, drinks, fresh fruits, and decorations was quite a physical and transportation challenge for us seniors. However, by supporting each other through phone calls and helping one another with errands, we successfully overcame this difficulty and got everything ready. On the day of the event, everyone gathered happily at the park to share a bountiful spread of delicious food, drinks, and fruit. Everyone wore festive celebration hats and held small Canadian flags, filling the air with pure joy and laughter. The most unforgettable and moving moment was when everyone spontaneously came together to sing the Canadian national anthem. The atmosphere was incredibly vibrant and uplifting! Our genuine joy was so infectious that many passersby in the park couldn’t help but stop and happily join in our celebration. This day has left a beautiful, lasting memory in the hearts of all who attended. Through implementing this project, we learned that age is never a barrier to building warm, neighbourly relationships. We discovered that simple, everyday interactions—like making a phone call or gathering together at a local park—can tightly bring older adults in the community together and push away loneliness. Many of us immigrated to this beautiful country. Canada’s sincere warmth and inclusive spirit have given us a profound sense of belonging. Gathering together in such a simple yet deeply affectionate way allowed us to once again feel the pure love of this land for its people. We feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to be able to spend our golden years in peace, comfort, and absolute happiness within this warm and friendly nation.
