Thanks to the Neighbourhood Small Grants program, we hosted our first Chinese Rice Dumpling (Zongzi) Workshop! On June 10, our enthusiastic registrants gathered at the workshop location of Chown Memorial and Chinese United Church. Guests were first treated to a brief history background of the origins of the rice dumpling followed by a dumpling making demo. Participants were then placed in smaller breakout groups that allowed each participant to try their hand at dumpling making. A static display with samples of ingredients, history about the zongzi, along with recipe sheets were made available to participants. The event ended with everyone sampling homemade zongzi and some tea and sweet buns. Participants also took home a few zongzi that they made. Workshop teachers were thrilled to be able to share their skills and meet people who live in the neighbourhood! We also received positive feedback from participants, many who indicated that they hoped there would be more cultural food workshops hosted in future. It was a great community building activity that brought longstanding Cambie Village residents and newcomers together. Thanks to all who helped make this workshop a success!
