Thanks to the support of Neighbourhood Small Grants and our partnership with the City of New Westminster, Colours of Conservation welcomed 45 registered attendees for a community painting workshop celebrating nature, creativity, and environmental appreciation.
The workshop invited participants to slow down, connect with their surroundings, and explore their creativity through a guided painting session. Together, we painted beautiful summer skies inspired by nature, giving everyone an opportunity to create their own artwork while reflecting on the beauty of the natural world around us.
All painting supplies were provided, along with snacks, soda, and water, helping create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for participants to enjoy the experience. Whether they came with painting experience or were trying something new, everyone had the opportunity to follow along, experiment with colours, and bring their own interpretation of a summer sky to life.
One of the most exciting parts of the event was the interest it attracted from people walking through the park. Many stopped to watch the painting session and asked if they could join us. We welcomed as many additional participants as our available supplies allowed, turning the workshop into an even larger community gathering than we had originally anticipated.
Our partnership with the City of New Westminster was instrumental in making this possible. By sponsoring the park booking fees, the City helped us keep the event accessible and accommodate a much larger gathering than we had initially planned. It was wonderful to see how a shared commitment to community engagement could help create opportunities for people to connect through art.
I am deeply grateful to Neighbourhood Small Grants and the City of New Westminster for supporting this initiative. Their contributions helped turn a simple painting workshop into an opportunity for neighbours to gather outdoors, express themselves creatively, and celebrate the natural environment together.
Colours of Conservation reminded us that appreciating and protecting our natural resources begins with taking the time to notice the beauty around us. Through art, we created space for creativity, connection, and a shared appreciation for nature. I hope to continue building on this experience with future community art projects that bring people together and celebrate the places we call home.
