Giving back to the Community through food!!
Earlier this year, I applied for the Richmond Neghiobourhood Small Grant, NSG, and I was thrilled when I got approved.
I wanted this project to be learning and collaborative involving the community. I aimed to teach simple baking skills that can be used in many different desserts. Throughout the summer, I hosted a series of live baking classes. People baked alongside me, and I guided them throughout the class.
Recipes were shared before the class. I also held a Q&A session if anyone had any questions. Live videos were saved for those who couldn’t attend the live baking sessions.
I also planned a get-together at South Arm Community Park. The theme was “Tea party.” The most amazing part was seeing the presence of young kids, teenagers, young adults, and even older adults attending this event. The event started with everyone introducing each other and talking about NSG.
Fresh treats were baked for everyone to try and attendees were encouraged to bake anything they learned from the previous classes. It was a gorgeous summer day, the table was set and overflowing with food. We made Indian Cha on the camping stove, friends contributed with beautiful flowers from their garden and many brought food and pastries. For one little girl, it was her very first tea party, she got her china for a tea party which was so adorable. The most amazing part was seeing the presence of young kids, teenagers young adults, and even older adults attending this event. It was a sense of community where everyone worked together, laughed, connected, and talked over the table full of food and desserts.
The most fun and important part of this Tea party Picnic was an art workshop with Bea Martin, a local artist and illustrator in Richmond. She illustrated all the baked goods taught in the class and led this workshop. All the attendees did sensory analyses of baked goods, including taste, texture, smell, and sound. She also printed illustrated pictures of baked goods for everyone to color. All participants enjoyed this activity. Thank you Neghiobhood Small Grant, this event was made possible. This grant allowed me to give back to the community and create special memories.
