“Empowering Community with Lifesaving First Aid Skills” lectures has been held on May25th and Nov 23th in Langley, with 106 participants registered. It was truly an honor to share my knowledge, skills and experiences with our community.
The events involving planning and organization. After months of preparation (including find the venue, set the dates and time), outlining the lecture structure and details, and promoted events through various social media platforms (Ins, WeChat), neighbors enthusiastically signed up to participate. Originally planned for 50-60 people, the lectures ended up with 106 attendees, including two instructors and three volunteers, nearly filling the classroom to capacity.
The two instructors are senior Heartsaver® instructors from the American Heart Association (AHA), with extensive teaching experience and volunteer experience in various major events across the countries.
Lecture usually starts with explaining when it’s your responsibility to give first aid, and how to keep yourself safe. Due to time constraints, lectures focused on first aid basics.
- Explain the first aid actions for fainting and seizures
- Recognize the signs and first aid actions for heart attack, stroke, low blood sugar
- How to control bleeding you can see
- Explain how to use a tourniquet
- Recognize the signs and first aid for chocking
- Explain the first aid cation for heat-related and cold-related emergencies
The attendees listened attentively, took notes, and asked various questions. After the lectures, participants responded positively, saying that the first aid knowledge shared in Chinese was very useful and practical. Many of participants are new immigrants or elder people who barely understand English. Lecture in Chinese make them more comfortable and help them learn. Participants wish to have more opportunities to learn first aid skills in the future; they expressed that, through lectures, they gained not only basic first aid knowledge but also hands-on practice skills from theory to actual exercises. Additionally, the sharing of real-life and work-related case studies provided great benefits to everyone.
We hope to continue hosting similar first aid related knowledge and skills sharing lectures in 2025 to meet the community’s demand.
Big thanks to NSG, program coordinator Yunuen Perez Vertti, their generous support and funding made this project possible.
Thank you, my dear neighbors, for being a part of this community journey. We look forward to sharing more knowledge, skills and experiences with you all in the future.
