We received our grant to build a community herb garden at the end of May, just as lumber prices were skyrocketing. However, we managed to build a 5’ x 8’ raised bed with cedar panels and come in within ten dollars of our budget. Thankfully our neighbours donated their time and labour for free.
Gardening on Vancouver Island is always challenging with urban deer only too happy to help harvest the crops. Indeed, we found hoof prints in the rich organic soil of the bed within hours of planting the herbs. We had chosen herbs noted for being deer resistant, like rosemary, thyme, oregano, mint, sage and chives, but, as we all know, deer do not always follow the rules. But they didn’t bother coming back after their initial inspection and the bed is thriving. Many thanks to the Nanaimo Foundation!
